The Human Side Of Politics

I saw this video the other morning attached to a post by Eli at FDL about the possiblity of Gore running for President in 2008. I watched the whole thing, and it’s rather lengthy, and found that it moved me in an unexpected way. As I watched it I saw a decent man, a caring, family man, a mensch. There was a warmth and humanity that was revealed in the video that I think the nation’s citizens are longing for in our leaders. We have had little humanity in our government for a long time now and it’s taken a toll on me, certainly, but I believe that it’s also taken an emotional toll on all Americans. We have become a country led by haters and blamers, which I find very sad.

The Chocolate Jesus

chocjesus.jpg
“One of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever.”

Bill Donohue is at it again.

From Digby:

Since the Vatican itself is a veritable sausage fest, and its most renowned artist, Michaelangelo, sculpted the most famous nude Biblical figure in history, it simply cannot logically be the nudity that’s the problem for the Catholic League. (Lord knows, the Catholic League is nothing if not logical.)

So it must be the medium. The fact that it is sculpted in chocolate is so offensive to Donohue’s thugs that they are issuing death threats to those who display such alleged blasphemy. I don’t exactly understand why that would be. Chocolate is no more meaningful than clay or bronze or marble. It doesn’t carry any scatalogical meaning nor is it thought of as derisive in any way. Perhaps the Catholic League could distribute its list of approved artist materials so that they won’t run afoul of the rules and cause themselves to be threatened with death and boycott or accused of hate speech.

It’s really too bad the artist didn’t think to do it in cartoon form because the entire right wing would be in a frenzy defending his right to free speech. Indeed, he would have become a martyr for all of western civilization. Unapproved sculpting materials, on the other hand, are so far out that death threats are entirely appropriate.

Why is it that I have such a problem understanding the alleged principles the religious conservatives lives by? And why am I so unimpressed with the leaders of a great religion who allow people to act like cretins in their name and yet cover up much more serious crimes against actual human beings?

Ya gotta love Digby.

Interesting News Of The Week

Trex puts the snark on our favorite wingnut blogger. Imagine trying to use the Frank Capra classic “Meet John Doe” as a rallying cry for Gestapo tactics.

There are couple of good diaries up a dKos this morning. I found this one particularly interesting. I’ve often wondered, ever since the Clinton impeachment really, how it is possible that the entire leadership of one of the major American political parties is seemingly populated entirely by people with absolutely no scruples or conscience (and yes, I have read Dean’s book). Here a member of the legal profession wonders the same thing and issus a call for action.

There is so much on the US Attorney’s scandal that I don’t know where to begin. All I know is that it’s now perfectly clear to me and any other rational person I know that the BushCo has been trying to turn the United States Department of Justice and the FBI into his own personal political hit squad. Let’s hope that the Congress will really have the guts to do something about it. If not, I can’t imagine what the consequences will be for our nation. This is actually from yesterday, but I found it today.
